You should have gotten a raise this month. Did UC pay you the right amount?

All ASEs should be seeing a raise effective Oct. 1. Check your most recent paycheck on UCPath and make sure the raises have been remitted to you! If your pay rate does not reflect the rates noted below, or if you have any other questions, please feel free to ask them below or in a private post.

We’re only able to win raises and other improvements because a supermajority of EECS/DSUS ASEs are dues-paying members of our union. If you’re not already a member, can you take a second to join your coworkers at https://uaw2865.org/join/?

Tutors, UCS1s, and Readers

Effective Oct. 1, all hourly ASEs should have received a $1/hour raise. That means the new gross hourly rate will be as follows:

  • Readers: $19.53
  • Tutors/UCS1s: $22.69

Undergrad TAs/UCS2s

Effective Oct. 1, all UCS2s should have received a 7.5% raise. This raise is reflected on the Oct.1-Oct. 31 paycheck, which is remitted at the end of October. The new gross monthly salaries (before taxes and deductions) should therefore be as follows:

The vast majority of UCS2s are at the step 1 rate.

Additionally, effective Oct. 1, if you are currently a TA/UCS2, you may be eligible for an experience-based raise (to step 2 or step 3) on the basis of the total number of previous semesters of non-summer TA/UCS2/(u)GSI experience (not including this semester):

  • 2 semesters of experience: You should be at step 2.
  • 4+ semesters: You should be at step 3 (or potentially paid even more).

The UC has uniformly denied these raises for UCS2s. If you are eligible (or might be eligible) for an experience-based raise but you are being paid at the baseline rate, please fill out this Google Form so that we can fight for these raises.

Grad TAs/GSIs*

Effective Oct. 1, all GSIs should receive (at least) a 25.1% raise to their gross monthly salary. See wage tables for 20-hour grad TAs/GSIs here (“Year 2 – October 2023”):

Some grad students have been appointed as TAs, others have been appointed as associate instructors (AIs).*

Effective Oct. 1, you may be eligible for an experience-based raise (to a higher step) on the basis of the total number of previous semesters of non-summer TA/UCS2/(u)GSI experience (not including this semester).

For TAs:

  • 2 semesters of experience: You should be at least at step 2.
  • 4+ semesters: You should be at least at step 3.

For Associate Instructors:

  • 4 semesters of experience: You should, at a minimum, be at step 3.
  • 4+ semester and advanced to candidacy: You should, at a minimum, be at step 5.

If you were appointed at a higher step earlier in the semester, you should, at a minimum be maintained at that step.

If you are being paid below the minimum rate for which you should be eligible based on the title you have been appointed into and your experience, please fill out this Google Form so that we can fight for these raises.

*Reclassification concerns for GSIs

At Berkeley, management has announced an intention to reclassify all GSIs from the Associate Instructor position into the teaching assistant position. This has been the case for many GSIs in EECS/DSUS. This is a unilateral and improper reclassification that could cost GSIs substantial amounts of money, and academic workers are fighting it tooth and nail. This issue is scheduled for arbitration this Fall.
