Summer Session

Unless you have been told otherwise by EECS and Data Science, and paid commensurately, you are not expected to perform any work outside of your appointment dates. The standard period of employment begins on the Monday of the first day of instruction and ends on the Friday of the last week of instruction. Check your email for an addendum from the department that details your expected pre- and post-work. If you do not receive an addendum, you are not expected to complete this work. If you are not paid for pre- and post-work but you are expected to complete this work, please contact your union to file a grievance about the issue.

Tutors/UCS1s and readers

Hourly ASEs are paid the same hourly rate during the summer session as during the preceding spring semester:

UCS2s and Summer uGSIs

If you did not receive an addendum to your offer letter indicating that you have job duties before or after the term of the summer session – then you are not required or expected to complete work outside of the summer session instructional period.

How summer session UCS2 pay is calculated

ASEs and the university currently have a dispute about whether the UCS2 job title is appropriate to use during the summer session. The dispute is headed toward resolution. This section details how the university is currently implementing UCS2/uGSI pay, and should not be interpreted as an admission that the lower UCS2 rate is correct under our contract. If you would like to know how a summer uGSI would be paid, use the “How summer session UCS2 pay is calculated,” together with the other information on the page, to do the calculation.

Summer Session C

Most EECS and Data Science courses during the summer session are offered during summer session C, which is 8 weeks long. If you are expected to complete any work outside of the 8 week period – which lasts from the Monday of the first week of instruction to the Friday of the last week of instruction, you should receive additional pre-work and post-work pay, on top of what is specified below. See the Pre-work and Post-work section.

During summer session C, ASEs receive two paychecks – one is issued on July 1 and another is issued on August 1. One-quarter of the total summer session C pay is issued on July 1, and three-quarters of the summer session C pay is issued on August 1.

Here is the amount of gross pay that should be issued on the July 1 paycheck:

Appointed HoursSummer 2023Summer 2024Summer 2025

Note that beginning in Summer 2026, if you have significant teaching experience, you should also receive an experience-based raise. See experience-based raises below. If you are eligible to be placed at step 2, multiply all values in the table by 1.03.

Summer Session D

Some EECS and Data Science courses during the summer session are offered during summer session D, which is 6 weeks long. If you are expected to complete any work outside of the 6 week period – which lasts from the Monday of the first week of instruction to the Friday of the last week of instruction, you should receive additional pre-work and post-work pay, on top of what is specified below. See the Pre-work and Post-work section.

The entirety of the summer session D pay is issued in a single paycheck, on August 1:

Pre-work and Post-work

Some ASEs will be expected to complete work before or after the summer session. Unless you have been told otherwise by EECS and Data Science, and paid commensurately, you are not expected to perform any work outside of your appointment dates. The standard period of employment begins on the Monday of the first day of instruction and ends on the Friday of the last week of instruction. Check your email for an addendum from the department that details your expected pre- and post-work, including your maximum work hours during the pre- and post-work periods. If you do not receive an addendum, you are not expected to complete this work.

Below is an example of an addendum that you may receive, with the most relevant information highlighted.

Example addendum email showing pre-work and post-work hours and dates

To calculate your pre-work and post-work pay, take the hourly rate and multiply by the number of hours specified in your addendum. For Summer Session C, the pre-work pay will be issued on the July 1 paycheck, and the post-work pay will be issued on the August 1 paycheck. For Summer Session D, the pre-work and post-work pay will be issued on the August 1 paycheck.

TA/GSI$53.66

Even if you do not receive an addendum, if you are expected to complete work in the pre-work or post-work periods, you are entitled to receive pay for this work. If you are not paid for pre- and post-work but you are expected to complete this work, or if you exceed your maximum hours, please contact your union to resolve the issue. ASEs have won an expedited process for dealing with these issues.

Experience-based raises

Beginning in Fall 2025, the university will establish a Step 2 for UCS2s 3% higher than the baseline UCS2 wage.

UCS2s will be eligible to be raised to step 2 after 2 semesters of qualifying UCS2/(u)GSI experience. A semester qualifies as experience if the ASE held an appointment as a UCS2/(u)GSI at 10 or more hours per week.

Step LevelAugust 1, 2025Oct. 1, 2025
Step 1$2,889.06$3,004.62
Step 2$2,975.73$3,094.75
Monthly gross pay for 20-hour UCS2 during school year, by step

Summer session experience does not count for the calculation of experience-based raises.

UCS2 experience will also count for calculating experience for (u)GSI appointments elsewhere in the university.
