All ASEs are entitled to receive a regular wage for their work. Our wages are governed by the Special Wages Article of the systemwide contract and Section H — Compensation of the EECS/DS local agreement. For more information on wages & benefits outside of EECS/DS undergraduates, see campuswide wage scales for GSIs.

Tutors/UCS1s and readers
Tutors/UCS1s and readers must receive an hourly wage based on the below table:
Title | April 1, 2023 | Oct. 1, 2023 | Oct. 1, 2024 |
---|---|---|---|
Readers | $18.53 | $19.53 | $20.53 |
Tutor/UCS1 | $21.69 | $22.69 | $23.69 |
Note that the dates denote the effective date of the wage increases. For example, UCS1s will begin receiving $22.69 per hour of labor on Oct. 1, 2023, which will first be reflected on the paycheck for the pay period ending Oct. 14, 2023, which will be paid on Oct. 25, 2023. Tutors/UCS1s and readers are entitled to be paid for all hours they work—see here for more information.
TAs/UCS2s
TAs/UCS2s receive a monthly salary on the basis of the below table.
Appointed hours | April 1, 2023 | Oct. 1, 2023 | Oct. 1, 2024 |
---|---|---|---|
20 | $2,500.00 | $2,687.50 | $2,889.06 |
15 | $1,875.00 | $2,015.63 | $2,166.80 |
12 | $1,500.00 | $1,612.50 | $1,733.44 |
10 | $1,250.00 | $1,343.75 | $1,444.53 |
8 | $1,000.00 | $1,075.00 | $1,155.63 |
The dates denote the effective date of the wage increases. For example, a 20-hour UCS2 will start receiving a wage of $2,687.50 beginning Oct. 1, 2023, which will first be reflected on the October paycheck paid on Nov. 1. If you are eligible to be placed at step 2, multiply all the values in the table by 1.03.
The university must appoint TAs/UCS2s into 5 month appointments, paying you on the first date of each month for each previous month’s work. Spring TAs/UCS2s are appointed for Jan. 1–May 31 and receive their first paycheck on Feb. 1, and Fall TAs/UCS2s are appointed for Aug. 1–Dec. 31 and receive their first paycheck on Sept. 1.
Note that if you have significant teaching experience, you should also receive an experience-based raise. See experience-based raises below.
Summer Session
ASEs and the university agreed to slightly different job titles during the summer session. During the summer session, the available job titles are tutor/UCS1, reader, and summer UGSI. The UCS2 title is not used during the summer. “Summer co-instructors” (i.e. the ASEs that effectively run courses during the summer) are formally appointed as 40 hour uGSIs.
Most ASEs in the summer session are not required to complete work outside of the summer session. For these ASEs, their period of employment begins on the Monday of the first day of instruction and ends on the Friday after the last day of instruction. Unless you have been told otherwise by EECS and Data Science, and paid commensurately, you are not expected to perform any work outside of your appointment dates. If you are not paid for pre- and post-work but you are expected to complete this work, please contact your union to file a grievance about the issue.
Tutors/UCS1s and readers
Hourly ASEs are paid the same hourly rate during the summer session as during the preceding spring semester:
Title | Summer 2023 | Summer 2024 | Summer 2025* |
---|---|---|---|
Readers | $18.53 | $19.53 | $20.53 |
Tutor/UCS1 | $21.69 | $22.69 | $23.69 |
*The contract expires after Spring 2025, so this wage is subject to negotiation.

Experience-based raises
Beginning in Fall 2025, the university will establish a Step 2 for UCS2s 3% higher than the baseline UCS2 wage.
UCS2s will be eligible to be raised to step 2 after 2 semesters of qualifying UCS2/(u)GSI experience. A semester qualifies as experience if the ASE held an appointment as a UCS2/(u)GSI at 10 or more hours per week.
Step Level | August 1, 2025 | Oct. 1, 2025 |
---|---|---|
Step 1 | $2,889.06 | $3,004.62 |
Step 2 | $2,975.73 | $3,094.75 |
Summer session experience does not count for the calculation of experience-based raises.
UCS2 experience will also count for calculating experience for (u)GSI appointments elsewhere in the university.
