8 | $1,000.00 | $1,075.00 | $1,155.63 |
The dates denote the effective date of the wage increases. For example, a 20-hour UCS2 will start receiving a wage of $2,687.50 beginning Oct. 1, 2023, which will first be reflected on the October paycheck paid on Nov. 1.
The university must appoint TAs/UCS2s into 5 month appointments, paying you on the first date of each month for each previous month’s work. Spring TAs/UCS2s are appointed for Jan. 1–May 31 and receive their first paycheck on Feb. 1, and Fall TAs/UCS2s are appointed for Aug. 1–Dec. 31 and receive their first paycheck on Sept. 1.
Note that if you have significant teaching experience, you should also receive an experience-based raise. See experience-based raises below.
Summer Session
ASEs and the university agreed to slightly different job titles during the summer session. During the summer session, the available job titles are tutor/UCS1, reader, and summer UGSI. The UCS2 title is not used during the summer. “Summer co-instructors” (i.e. the ASEs that effectively run courses during the summer) are formally appointed as 40 hour uGSIs.
Most ASEs in the summer session are not required to complete work outside of the summer session. For these ASEs, their period of employment begins on the Monday of the first day of instruction and ends on the Friday after the last day of instruction. Unless you have been told otherwise by EECS and Data Science, and paid commensurately, you are not expected to perform any work outside of your appointment dates. If you are not paid for pre- and post-work but you are expected to complete this work, please contact your union to file a grievance about the issue.
Tutors/UCS1s and readers
Hourly ASEs are paid the same hourly rate during the summer session as during the preceding spring semester:
Title | Summer 2023 | Summer 2024 | Summer 2025* |
---|---|---|---|
Readers | $18.53 | $19.53 | $20.53 |
Tutor/UCS1 | $21.69 | $22.69 | $23.69 |
*The contract expires after Spring 2025, so this wage is subject to negotiation.
UCS2s and Summer uGSIs
ASEs and the university currently have a dispute about whether the UCS2 job title is appropriate to use during the summer session.
How the UC should be implementing summer session pay
Summer uGSIs (Non-head, non-instructor)
If you are neither a head TA nor a summer co-instructor – and if you did not receive an addendum to your offer letter indicating that you have job duties before or after the term of the summer session – then you are not required or expected to complete work outside of the summer session instructional period.
How summer session uGSI pay is calculated
- Take the 10-month (annual) salary for a given position at full time, and divide it by 2. This is the total semester salary.
- Divide the total semester salary by the maximum workload for the semester, which is 17 * 40. Round to the nearest cent. This is the hourly rate.
- Multiply the hourly rate by the maximum workload for the summer session, which is N * K, where N is the number of hours per week and K is the number of weeks in the summer session. (This calculation is per the Summer Sessions section of the CBA). This is the total summer session salary.
- For Summer Session C, 25% of the salary is paid on July 1, and 75% is paid on August 1. For Summer Session D, all of the salary is paid on August 1.
For example, here is the calculation for a 30-hour summer uGSI at step 1 during Summer session C in summer 2024.
- According to the contract, the October 2023 (which is the date of raise closest to summer 2024) annual wage for a uGSI (Teaching Assistant) at step 1 at full time is $62,531. Thus the semester salary is $62,531/2 = $31,265.50.
- Divide the total semester salary for a full time uGSI at step 1, $31,265.50, by the maximum workload for the semester, 17 * 40 = 680, to yield the unrounded hourly rate $31,265.50 / 680 = $45.978676. Round to the nearest center to get an hourly rate of $45.98.
- Summer Session C is 8 weeks long, so its maximum workload for a 30-hour summer uGSI is 8 * 30 = 240. Multiply the hourly rate of $45.98 by the maximum workload 240 to yield a total summer session salary of $45.99 * 240 = $11,035.20.
- 25% of the salary ($2,758.80) is paid on July 1. 75% ($8,276.40) is paid on August 1.
Additionally, if you are a head TA or summer instructor, you are entitled to be paid additionally for pre-work and post-work. See the relevant section below.
Summer Session C
Most EECS and Data Science courses during the summer session are offered during summer session C, which is 8 weeks long. If you are expected to complete any work outside of the 8 week period – which lasts from the Monday of the first week of instruction to the Friday of the last week of instruction, please contact your union to file a grievance.
During summer session C, ASEs receive two paychecks – one is issued on July 1 and another is issued on August 1. One-quarter of the total summer session C pay is issued on July 1, and three-quarters of the summer session C pay is issued on August 1.
Here is the amount of gross pay that should be issued on the July 1 paycheck:
Appointed Hours | Summer 2023 | Summer 2024 | Summer 2025* |
---|---|---|---|
40 | $2,940.80 | $3,678.40 | $4,292.80 |
30 | $2,205.60 | $2,758.80 | $3,219.60 |
20 | $1,470.40 | $1,839.20 | $2,146.40 |
15 | $1,102.80 | $1,379.40 | $1,609.80 |

20 | $4,411.20 | $5,517.60 | $6,439.20 |
15 | $3,308.40 | $4,138.20 | $4,829.40 |
12 | $2,646.72 | $3,310.56 | $3,863.52 |
10 | $2,205.60 | $2,758.80 | $3,219.60 |
8 | $1,764.48 | $2,207.04 | $2,575.68 |
*The contract expires after Spring 2025, so this wage is subject to negotiation.
Note that if you have significant teaching experience, you should also receive an experience-based raise. See experience-based raises below.
Summer Session D
Some EECS and Data Science courses during the summer session are offered during summer session D, which is 6 weeks long. If you are expected to complete any work outside of the 6 week period – which lasts from the Monday of the first week of instruction to the Friday of the last week of instruction, please contact your union to file a grievance.
The entirety of the summer session D pay is issued in a single paycheck, on August 1:
Appointed Hours | Summer 2023 | Summer 2024 | Summer 2025* |
---|---|---|---|
40 | $8,822.40 | $11,035.20 | $12,878.40 |

Summer uGSI (Head TA/Co-instructor)
Head TAs and co-instructors are expected to complete additional work before and after the instructional period of the summer session, as specified in an addendum to their appointment letter. These ASEs therefore receive additional pay for this additional work. If you are a head TA or co-instructor that does not receive an addendum/additional pay, please contact your union to file a grievance over this issue.
Here is the amount of pre-work pay and post-work pay offered to co-instructors and head TAs:
Job title | Pre-work pay | Post-work pay |
---|---|---|
Summer co-instructor (40-hour) | 80 hours | 40 hours |
Head TA (Any appointment percentage) | 20 hours | 20 hours |
Note that pre-work and post-work is pro-rated for summer instructors, but is the same for all head TAs regardless of appointment percentage.
The pre-work and post-work pay will be issued as a “lump sum” payment in UCPath. The pre-work and post-work pay are issued in addition to the ordinary pay that would be offered to non-head TAs/co-instructors. See the previous section for that information. However, the pre-work and post-work pay will not appear on your summer offer letter; they will appear in an addendum to your offer letter after you accept your appointment.
If you expect to exceed the maximum workload for either the pre-work or post-work period, you should reach out to your union. (The pre-work and post-work periods have separate “caps” from the summer session itself, and also have separate caps from each other.) See overwork protections for more information.
Here is the dollar amount of pre-work pay:
Appointed Hours | Summer 2024 | Summer 2025* |
---|---|---|
Summer co-instructor (40 hour) | $3,678.40 | $4,292.80 |
Head TA (Any appointment percentage) | $919.60 | $1,073.20 |
And here is the dollar amount of post-work pay:
Appointed Hours | Summer 2024 | Summer 2025* |
---|---|---|
Summer co-instructor (40 hour) | $1,839.20 | $2,146.40 |
Head TA (Any appointment percentage) | $919.60 | $1,073.20 |
*The contract expires after Spring 2025, and the agreement creating pre-work and post-work pay expires after summer 2024, so this wage is subject to negotiation.
The previous section and what you’ve read so far is enough to calculate your pay for the summer session. However, if you would like to see more detailed calculations for the exact amount of money you should receive on each paycheck, keep reading.

How the UC is actually implementing summer session pay
Summer UCS2s (Non-head, non-instructor)
If you are neither a head TA nor a summer co-instructor – and if you did not receive an addendum to your offer letter indicating that you have job duties before or after the term of the summer session – then you are not required or expected to complete work outside of the summer session instructional period.
How summer session UCS2 pay is calculated
- Take the monthly (annual) salary for a given position at full time, and multiply it by 5.
For example, here is the calculation for a 30-hour summer UCS2 at step 1 during Summer session C in summer 2024.
- According to the local agreement, the October 2023 (which is the date of raise closest to summer 2024) monthly wage for a UCS2 at step 1 at full time is $5,375. Thus the semester salary is $5,375 * 5 = $26,875.
- Divide the total semester salary for a full time UCS2 at step 1, $26,875, by the maximum workload for the semester, 17 * 40 = 680, to yield the unrounded hourly rate $26,875 / 680 = 39.5220588. Round to the nearest center to get an hourly rate of $39.52.
- Summer Session C is 8 weeks long, so its maximum workload for a 30-hour summer UCS2 is 8 * 30 = 240. Multiply the hourly rate of $39.52 by the maximum workload 240 to yield a total summer session salary of $39.52 * 240 = $9,484.80.
- 25% of the salary ($2,371.20) is paid on July 1. 75% ($7,113.60) is paid on August 1.

Note that if you have significant teaching experience, you should also receive an experience-based raise. See experience-based raises below.
Experience-based raises
TAs/UCS2s and summer uGSIs are eligible to receive experience-based raises on the basis of how many semesters they have served as an TA/UCS2 or uGSI at Berkeley. Specifically, for each two semesters of experience you have accrued, not including summers, you go up one step, up to a maximum of step 3. Each step is 3% higher than the step below it.
Semesters of experience | Step | Increase above step 1 |
---|---|---|
0-1 | 1 | 0% |
2-3 | 2 | 3% |

Note that tutors/UCS1s are not eligible for experience-based raises. Also, the issue of experience-based raises is currently subject to a dispute between ASEs and the university, which has resulted in many ASEs not getting the step raises they deserve.
Explanation of contract dispute
The university contends two things:
- UCS2s are not eligible for step raises. (That is, all UCS2s are at step 1.)
- A semester does not count as teaching experience if it is at less than 10 hours per week (25% FTE).
The dispute over the eligibility of UCS2s has resulted in no UCS2 receiving any experience-based raises. Many ASEs filed a grievance over this, which is currently going through the grievance process.
For a 20-hour UCS2 during the spring or fall, that compensation looks like this:
Title, Hours, and Step | August 2023 | Oct 1, 2023 | Oct. 1, 2024 |
---|---|---|---|
20-hour UCS2, step 1 | $2,500.00 | $2,687.50 | $2,889.06 |
20-hour UCS2, step 2 | $2,575.00 | $2,768.13 | $2,975.73 |
20-hour UCS2, step 3 | $2,652.25 | $2,851.17 | $3,065.01 |
Recreating all the tables on this page for the different steps would be cumbersome. Therefore, if you are eligible for step pay, just multiply the salary listed on the page for by the multiplier for your step.
